A Schengen visa for Latvia is used by third-country nationals for tourism, private visits, conferences, and business travel. Our guide explains eligibility, documents, filing steps, fees, and timing.
Overview
A Latvian Schengen visa is used for a short stay. Stays longer than 90 days require a national visa or a residence permit. It is important to determine whether Latvia is the correct country to process the application.
You must apply through Latvia if:
- it is your only destination;
- it is the main destination of your trip based on purpose or length of stay;
- it is the first Schengen country you’ll enter.
Consider timing. Latvia accepts short-stay visa applications no earlier than 6 months before the planned trip and no later than 15 calendar days before departure. The standard processing time is 15 calendar days. In some cases, it may be extended up to 45 days.
What a Latvia Schengen Visa Offers
The Schengen visa for Latvia provides a legal basis for short-term travel. In most cases, it is suited for onward movement within the Schengen area during the validity period. It is commonly used for tourism, family or friend visits, commercial meetings, conferences, and similar temporary purposes.
The scope is narrow. A short-stay visa does not replace a national long-stay visa or a residence permit for relocation or other legal grounds.
Border control checks entry conditions. Even with a valid visa, the traveler may be asked to show:
- a return ticket;
- hotel booking proof;
- host information;
- insurance;
- proof of sufficient funds.
Schengen Visa Eligibility for Latvia
Eligibility depends on two factors:
- nationality;
- the status of the travel document.
EU Regulation 2018/1806 applied to Latvian Schengen visa requirements. Annex I lists countries whose nationals must obtain a short-stay visa. They cannot enter visa-free.
Annex II sets the opposite rule. It includes countries whose nationals are generally exempt from short-stay visa requirements. The distinction is strict. It is applied at the EU level.
Below is a table that covers 30 major countries. All listed states fall under the visa-required regime for Latvia when traveling with an ordinary passport.
| China | Algeria | India | Morocco |
| Indonesia | Sudan | Pakistan | Iraq |
| Bangladesh | Afghanistan | Nigeria | Saudi Arabia |
| Russia | Kazakhstan | Ethiopia | Nepal |
| Egypt | Sri Lanka | Vietnam | Syria |
| Iran | Kenya | Turkey | Tanzania |
| Thailand | Uzbekistan | South Africa | Myanmar |
| Philippines | Democratic Republic of the Congo |
Some files go through added scrutiny. Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that an in-depth examination is carried out for nationals of certain states listed under Article 22 procedures and for some refugees or stateless persons who received that status in another country.
Required Documents for Latvia Schengen Visa
Latvia’s official checklist is clear. It covers both identity documents and trip evidence. At minimum, the file includes a valid travel document, a completed and signed application form, and one recent photograph. Travel medical insurance is also required. So is payment of the visa fee. Biometric data is part of the process as well. Applicants usually provide fingerprints and a photo during submission.
Before the appointment, prepare these supporting documents as well:
- Proof of the trip purpose, such as tourism bookings, a private invitation, or business visit documents;
- Proof of accommodation for the planned stay;
- Proof of financial means;
- Evidence that supports departure from the Schengen area before the visa ends;
- A transit visa for the next destination, if transit rules make it necessary.
Valid passport
Issued within the last 10 years. Validity also matters. The document must remain valid for at least 3 months after leaving the Schengen area. Two blank pages are required. No exceptions for visa placement.
Recent passport-sized photographs
One photo is required. Color only. The size is fixed — 35×45 mm. It must meet official visa photo standards. Non-compliant images are rejected.
Completed and signed application form
The application form is completed electronically, then printed and signed. Latvia accepts the online form format, and each traveler files a separate application.
Biometric data (fingerprints)
Fingerprints are collected at submission. This is standard for a Latvian Schengen visa. There is a limited exception. It applies only if biometrics from the last 5 years are already stored. Even then, reuse is not guaranteed. If the record cannot be used, fingerprints are taken again.
Travel medical insurance covering the Schengen area
The policy must be valid across all Schengen Member States. Minimum coverage is €30,000. That threshold is fixed. The insurance must include urgent treatment, hospital care, and repatriation in case of death.
Proof of visa fee payment
The state fee is a mandatory part of the file unless the applicant falls under a waiver. Keep the payment proof and check the exact fee category before you submit the application, because reduced fees apply to some nationalities under EU facilitation agreements.
Financial proof also has a clear benchmark. Latvia states that adequate means of subsistence are at least €14 per day for stays of up to 30 days, and at least €780 if the intended stay exceeds 30 days.
Latvia Schengen Visa Application Process
- Step 1
Define visa category
Start with the purpose of travel. A short-stay Latvian Schengen visa is the correct route for tourism, private visits, short business trips, and similar temporary stays that remain within the 90/180 rule.
- Step 2
Confirm entry needs
Next, confirm two points: whether you need a visa; whether Latvia is the competent state for the application.
That second question is critical. Filing with the wrong consulate can delay the case or lead to refusal to accept the file.
- Step 3
Prepare documentation
Then build the document package. The consulate expects a coherent file, so the passport, application, host information, accommodation evidence, insurance, and travel purpose documents should all match the same itinerary.
For a business trip, Latvia’s consular guidance commonly expects an approved invitation or an invitation letter containing the host company’s data and the purpose of travel. For a private visit, the file usually includes an approved invitation or a compliant invitation letter from the host.
- Step 4
Book appointment
Applications are filed with an embassy or consulate if there is one in the country of legal residence. Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that visa applications to Latvian diplomatic and consular missions are lodged through VFS Global, and where Latvia has no mission in the country of legal residence, another Schengen state may represent Latvia for short-stay visas.
- Step 5
Complete application form
Complete the Schengen visa for Latvia form. Print it only after reviewing all fields, because discrepancies between the form and the supporting documents create avoidable problems during the consular review.
- Step 6
Pay visa fee
Pay the state fee under the correct category. Standard, reduced, and exempt groups all exist, so the payment amount must match the applicant’s age and nationality-based fee regime.
- Step 7
Submit application
Submit the file in person when required. Provide fingerprints if they are not already valid in the Visa Information System. Once the application is lodged, the authority reviews the documents and checks competence. Prepare to provide additional information if necessary.
Latvia Schengen Visa Fees
The standard Latvian Schengen visa fee is €90 for applicants aged 12+. Children aged 6–12 pay €45. Reduced rates of €35 apply to countries covered by EU visa-facilitation agreements. Latvia currently lists:
- 1Ukraine
- 2Albania
- 3Armenia
- 4Azerbaijan
- 5Belarus
- 6Bosnia and Herzegovina
- 7Georgia
- 8Serbia
- 9Montenegro
- 10North Macedonia
- 11Moldova
Some applicants do not pay the short-stay fee at all. The official waiver list includes children under six, certain pupils and students traveling for study or educational training, certain researchers, and some representatives of nonprofit organizations aged 25 or younger who travel for qualifying events.
Processing Time for Latvia Schengen Visa
The standard decision period for Latvian Schengen visa is 15 days from the application. Latvia may extend that period to 45 calendar days. It is extended when extra scrutiny, consultation, or additional documents are required.
The recommended filing window is wide. Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before travel. Latvia’s formal deadline is no later than 15 calendar days before the intended trip.

Conclusion
A Latvian Schengen visa is a short-stay travel authorization with clear rules. The process is strict. Results are usually more predictable when the applicant files through the correct consulate, prepares a complete document set, and submits the application on time. Good preparation matters here.
In most cases, delays do not come from the system itself. They come from the file. Weak paperwork is one of the main problems. A missing invitation can create questions. So can incomplete proof of funds. Late submission is another common issue. Inconsistent travel details also make the case weaker.
Small gaps often cause bigger delays. One unclear point may lead to extra checks. That is why accuracy matters at every step. For a Latvian Schengen visa, a clear purpose of travel, consistent supporting documents, and realistic timing give the application a much stronger foundation.
